Health
is not mere the presence of well being but it is complete
fitness of body, mind and soul. To achieve this goal is not
easy, one needs Determination, Dedication, Discipline, Devotion,
Destination and Persistence to reach this goal.
AYURVED is one of the ancient sciences, which has defined
this health and explained the techniques to maintain the same.
To attain this health ayurved recommends the five methods
of body cleansing which are known as PANCHAKARMA.
These methods are employed to cure as well as to prevent diseases
and to improve the immunity. Thus Panchakarma therapy is a
healing and preventive measure.
|
| Method I :
Vaman |
|
This
can be explained as medically induced emesis. After
proper external and internal snehan (oleation/ Massage)
and swedan (sudation/ foementation) of the body, specially
prepared decoction of herbs is given to the patient
and emesis is induced. This procedure is indicated in
the vasant ritu (Spring season) to prevent disease due
to kapha dosha in a healthy person. Vaman is highly
beneficial to treat the diseases of the respiratory
system like rhinitis, Asthma and other diseases like
amlapitta, various skin diseases and many more.
|
|
| Method II :
Virechan |
|
This
can be explained as therapeutic purgation. The preparatory
procedures are same as in vaman. In healthy individuals
the procedure is done in sharad ritu (autumn season)
to prevent the disease arising due to pitta dosha. It
is recommended in Jaundice, Hemiplegia, Ascitis, Acne
vulgaris, Osteoarthritis, Lumbar Disorders, Constipation,
Skin diseases like eczema, Psoriasis.
|
|
| Method III : Nasya |
|
This
means instillation of medicines through the nasal route.
The medicines are in the form of medicated oils or medicated
ghee. Nasya therapy is primarily used in treating the
diseases like sinusitis, rhinitis , hairfall, epilepsy,
facial paralysis, Cervical Spondylosis, Migraine and
hemiplegia and various other psychological and neurological
disorders. Nasya is also known for improving the intellect
of an individual.
|
|
| Method IV :
Basti |
|
This
can be termed as the medicated enemas. Here medicines
in the form of decoction {niruha basti} or oils/ghee
(anuvasan) are administered through the anal route.
Basti is used primarily in treating diseases due to
vata dosha. It is indicated in Lumbar disorders, Spondylosis,
Osteoartritis, Osteopenia, Osteoporosis, Hemiplegia,
Diabetes Mellitus, etc.
|
|
| Method V : Rakta mokshan |
|
This
is a process of blood letting. This can be done by various
methods like sira veda, jaloukavacharan (leech application)
etc. The process is basically meant for purification
of the blood and to treat blood related disorders, skin
diseases, hypertension and many other diseases.

|
Abhyanga
is a massage done by experienced massage therapists
using herbal oil. The oil is specially selected for
the particular body constitution. The process is long
and thorough. More force is used to loosen the excess
doshas and direct them toward the organs of elimination.
There is a related treatment called Shirodhara, in which
warm, herbalised sesame oil/ butter milk is dripped
in a stream onto the forehead to profoundly relax the
nervous system and balance the prana Vata, the dosha
that exerts control over the brain.
Physical
Benefits : It is easy to imagine that moisture retention
and general circulation would be enhanced creating lustrous
skin, but this practice actually accomplishes much more.
The combined knowledge of Western and Eastern sensibilities
professes that energy blockages are the foundations
of all disease, because they produce the ill formed
cells commonly called free radicals. Specifically within
the ayurvedic sensibility, we all have seven dhatus
or levels of bodily tissue that are responsible for
the entire structure of the body, and its organs and
systems. Regular practice oof abhyanga energetically
penetrates to progressively deeper dhatus, removing
blockages of energy. So the prolonged practice of abhyanga
effectively supports the body on this cellular level,
too.
Psychological
and Spiritual Benefits: What we more consciously
experience when we do abhyanga regularly, simply a feeling
of calm, well-being. Just like when one practices yoga,
eats well, or prays, we are not conscious of some enormous
effect. It is because of the nature of the mind-body-spirit
relationship.

|
| Swedana : |
|
Sweating leads the doshas to fluidity,
making it easier for it to flow out of the system. It
opens up the pores and rid the body of impurities through
the sweat glands.
